Frequently Asked Question

Frequently Asked Question

Solar Panel Systems are more affordable than you think.

Is there enough sunshine in Oregon to use Solar Panels?

Indeed there is.  In fact there is as much sunshine in Oregon as there is in Germany, the world leader in Solar Electricity production.  The amount of sun varies throughout the year, but on average Portland receives quite a bit of sunshine.  More than enough to power a Solar Power system for your home or business.

Do you have to remove the shingles on my roof in order to install a Solar Electric system?

No.  The shingles do not have to be removed. However, it is important that you have a newer roof, shingles with at least ten years of life.  If you do not or you are not sure, call a roofer to take a look for you.  Or call us and we will call someone for you.  It is not a good idea to install a set of Solar Panels on a roof that will need to be replaced in a few years.

How long does it take to install Solar Panels?

Most homes systems can be installed in one day.  Businesses take two or three days.

Is it expensive?

No.  In fact, the systems pay for themselves quickly, usually within five years or less.  And once the system is paid for, it continues to produce electricity, which means money in your pocket for months, years and decades to come.

Isn’t the Government encouraging Solar Power as an alternative energy source?

They sure are.  The State and Federal Governments have created incentives that make Solar Power almost irresistible.  People and some businesses who install solar power receive tax credits, rebates, accelerated depreciation and grants.  The actual cost of the Solar Power System can be reduced significantly.  Usually well over 75%.  For rural business, the cost of the system can be reduced by over 90%.  At the same time, the value of the Solar Power System is not included when your home or business is assessed for tax purposes.  This means that even though you made a significant and valuable addition to your property, you property taxes won’t go up!  And when you do sell your property, the Solar Panels can add substantially to its Fair Market Value.

Can I finance the Solar Power System?

You bet.  We work with a local lender who has created a special no cost/low interest loan program for these systems.  You can finance the system and use your monthly savings to make the monthly payment.

 Is the system guaranteed?

Yes.  The solar panels are guaranteed for up to 25 years, but they often last much longer than that.   We guarantee our installation and workmanship for five years.

How about maintenance.  Is it expensive?

No.  Just make sure that the panels stay clean and free from debris.

How do I know the system is working?

Watch you electric bill and note the savings each month.  To make sure it is operating optimally, we can provide a monitoring service for you.  We will know if something is wrong before you do and make sure the problem is corrected.

“Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

Costs, Rebates and Tax Credits

Lower Costs

Solar Technology has come a long way in the last twenty years.  In the process, the costs of these Solar Panel Systems has fallen dramatically.  The cost of the Solar Panels themselves has fallen to about half of what they were 10 years ago.

Tax Credits

In addition to lower prices, State and Federal Governments are offering jaw dropping incentives.  The Federal government is giving a 30% tax credit.  This is not a deduction, but a dollar for dollar reduction in your tax bill.  It is money in your pocket.   Oregon provides up to $6,000 tax credits.

Accelerated Depreciation

The Federal government is also allows an accelerated depreciation.  For businesses, this gives you the ability to deduct the cost of the system at a much faster rate, five years, than you otherwise could.  This gives you an effective 25% reduction in the cost of your system.

Virtually all utilities offer some type of rebate for the cost of the system.  The rebate is based upon the size or Wattage of the system.  The Energy Trust of Oregon rebates are still available, but that are being reduced on a regular basis.  Install your system now to lock in your rebate before they drop even further.

Under the right circumstances, you could be eligible for an additional government grant, at both the State and Federal level.  At the federal level, these grants can be for up to 25% of the project costs.  State grant size and availability will vary.  Remember, a grant is not a loan and it does not have to be repaid.

Non Taxable Capital Investment.

In many states including Oregon, the increase in the value of the property created by the installation of the Solar Panel system is exempt from real property taxation.  That is to say, your property taxes cannot go up.

Increase in Property Value

There is no denying that Solar Systems add value to your property.  When you sell you home or business, the selling price will be increased, sometimes significantly, by the presence of a solar system.  This is in addition to all the credits and rebates you have already collected.

You Reduce Your Energy Bill For Years.

Don’t forget the main reason you installed this system in the first place:  To reduce your energy consumption.  These Solar Panel systems are almost maintenance free.   As a result, the function flawlessly month after month, year after year, for decades. And each month, your energy bill is reduced.  Go ahead and crunch the numbers and you will see that your savings will be in the thousands of dollars.  And your carbon footprint is smaller.

It is a “no-brainer”.  You have to install a Solar Panel system.  You are losing money every month you put it off.
